Hagia Sophia became a mosque again after 86 years
The decision, which was good news for the Muslim world, was approved at a meeting of the Turkish State Council.
The church, founded by Emperor Constantine in 532, was completed in 537. In 1453, when Mehmet Sultan conquered Constantinople, Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque. From that time until 1934, the mosque was a unique architectural object. Since November 24, 1934, Hagia Sophia has been in the service of the museum, and today, July 10, 2020, it has again become a place of worship for Muslims.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed the decree despite threats from Christian countries.
It should be noted that the Hagia Sophia complex was one of the main churches of Christian Orthodoxy in Byzantine times.
